Moving forward

Hello Families:
This week I have started to contact you by phone to connect and say hello.  I have left a few messages on some cell phones too.  I will do my best to reconnect throughout the week.  It is important that you have read the email from the board regarding access to technology.  If you do not have access please fill out the survey so that data can be collected.  You can access the email on the board website.  Also......

I have granted you access to an amazing recourse at www.kidsa-z.com.  This is a wonderful tool to help building reading skills. I encourage parents and guardians to request access to the Parent Portal by clicking the Parents button on www.kidsa-z.com. I have already approved Parent Portal access from my Roster page.  I only put parents emails that I have on file so not every parent will have access.  If you need me to add an email, let me know.  I will email you directly the username and password shortly.  If this doesn't work, let me know at my board email and we will navigate together.  This resource is only available till the end of June. I will update you with further information as it is given.  My google classroom will be up and running shortly.
My board email is judith.petramala@yrdsb.ca
It was nice hearing their voices today.  I miss them! :( Thank you for being partners in your child's education.  I so appreciate it!
Another great FREE site is Scholastic learn at home.  There you can go to Grade One and you can be divided up by week 1 and so on.  There are books that can be read to you, then you read and comprehension tasks and interactive games too that's at their grade level.  Please check this one out.
Stay well
Mrs. Petramala

Our week when we return....

Hello families:
There's lots to do to keep your little ones busy and to keep their skills fresh.  We are working on Story Elements so when reading you can discuss: PLOT- beginning, middle, end( what's happening in the story) SETTING- where the story takes place CHARACTERS- who are the people/animals in the story MAIN IDEA- gets from the title.  Have them retell the story in their own words and maybe write about the above ideas too in complete thoughts. Have them make connections, does this story remind you of anything (an experience, another book?)  Every Friday you can write about their week.  You can brainstorm what they did each day and then write about it using transition words like: first, then, next and finally.  Having them, think it, say it, write it and re-read to make sense will be beneficial.  We are learning to expand our thoughts too.  State, explain and give an example.  (Yesterday I went to a movie.  I saw Frozen.  My favourite part was.....)  Your local Library has lots of cool and educational games too.  Check out their website and visit to get books too!   In Math, we are learning non standard measurement.  Have them measure you or items around the house with a crayon/marker.  Have them estimate first then measure.  Make sure they start at one spot, and have no overlaps or gaps.  They have to mark off as they go using their finger too!   We use words like, shorter, shortest, longer, longest, and a bit.  We are learning Mapping Skills in Social Studies.  Have them talk about cardinal directions and when you're in the car have them explain what direction you are going and why are directions helpful?  You can also build on skip counting, simple addition and subtraction facts.  Review of concepts already taught will be beneficial.  There's lots of websites too.... starfall, mathville are just a few to keep busy and make learning fun.  Playing together too and they're great helpers, have them help you do chores around the house and prepare meals too!
Here's some other reminders...
1) When we return it will be Day 3 of our cycle.
2) Our M.W.W. words for week #16 are sight words and short u words
some    her     would    make    duck    luck    suck    stuck

4) Our Assessment Folders went home too.  Look at all the amazing work we are doing!
5) Keep up with the reading.  I am so proud of how far we have come!  We are using our strategies independently now!
