 Hello Grade One Families:

We have a lot happening in Rm 214.  Later this week there will be a note coming home regarding our Fun Fair Classroom Basket. Please stay tuned.  We are very fortunate to have Deborah Kerbel, author of Sun Dog visit our school on May 1st. Next week is Canadian Children's Book Week.  There are author's visiting schools across Canada and our school was selected!

Our week for April 22- April 26, 2024

Hello Grade One Families:

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Monday is Day 1 of our cycle and it's EARTH DAY!  We will be wearing blue, green or brown to celebrate EARTH DAY!  We are learning to be kind to the EARTH everyday!

2) We will have a Fire Drill (weather permitting) on April 22.

3) Thursday is Library (Day 4)

4) Our MWW words for Lesson # 53 are review words and digraph review:

Our week for April 15-19, 2024

 April Showers bring May flowers!  Please dress for the weather as we are outside weather permitting for two recesses.  Please make sure we have extra clothes at school at all times too.

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

We will be focussing on Comprehension to Text.  We will be orally answering questions about the text as well as some of our Reading Groups will be answering questions in complete sentences too.

4) Yearbook applications for the front and back cover are due back by Friday April 19.  I have extra applications if you need another one.

5) Our Friday Letter and our Assessment Folders went home on Friday.  Please take some time and read through our work. We are working on Writing Goals in the classroom.  We know what our Writing Goals are and we are working on them daily in class.  

We are learning to Think it, Say it, Write it and Re-read to make sense.  We are learning to use a Writer's checklist too.  See below for an example.

Our week for April 8-12, 2024

 Attention Parents:  Early Dismissal on Monday April 8 @ 12:40 pm due to the expected Solar Eclipse.

We will be coming home with a short read aloud about a Solar Eclipse.  We will read it to you as our homework on Monday night.  Please be safe.

5) Calling all ARTISTS!  Yearbook cover applications are in the Library.  If your child would like to help design a cover for our Yearbook, (Front or back) all applications are due back by April 19. Winning designs will be on the cover or back cover.

 Hello Grade One Families:

Please note there will be no school on Friday March 29, 2024 (Good Friday) and Monday April 1, 2024 (Easter Monday). School will resume on Tuesday April 2, 2024.  

We will be having a SPIRIT WEEK all week next week too!

4) We will have an early dismissal on April 8 @ 12:40 pm due to the Solar Eclipse.  Please make arrangements prior to this day as care is only provided for Day Care students.  

5) April 11 is Movie Night @ Rick Hansen.  Please refer to the Family memos that have been electronically sent home previously from our school.

Our week for March 25- 28

Hello Grade One Families:

We will not be having any MWW words for the next 2 weeks as it is short weeks for both.  We will resume our MWW words the week of April 8.

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Monday is Day 3 of our cycle.

2) Library is on Tuesday Day 4.

3) Please dress your child for the weather.  We are outside weather permitting for 2 recesses.

4) We have entered a new unit in Math.  Adding Strategies.  One of the aspects we will explore are Brain Benders/Word Problems.  An example we tried this week was:

We are learning to explain our thinking using, pictures, numbers and words.  We will explore many stratgies to add and subtract in this unit.  A unit letter will go home this week.  Here are some strategies we will be exploring:

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Hello Grade One Families:

Welcome to March!  March Break is from Monday March 11- Friday March 15.  School will resume on Monday March 18.  

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Monday is Day 3 of our cycle.

2) Tuesday is Library.  Please return Library books on this day as there are limited times that we can go on other days.  

3) Please send lots of snacks, we are growing.  

4) Our MWW words for Lesson #49 are review words from the last few lessons.  Our activity sheet is a Roll and Read.  We are to decode using our strategies and we can orally put the word in a sentence too.

5) Our Assessment Folders went home on Friday.  Please look through our amazing work.  Everything can be kept at home.  Please send back the folder on Monday.

6) It's Spirit week next week.  Please look below for our daily Spirit Themes.

8) Recognition Assembly is on Thursday at 11:30 am.  Those receiving an award have already been notified in your child's agenda.  The assembly is in the Gym.

 Hello Grade One Families:

We will be celebrating PINK SHIRT DAY on Wednesday February 28, 2024.  February 28, 2024, is Pink Shirt Day which is a globally recognized day to support anti-bullying, upstanding behaviour, and simple acts of kindness.

We will be learning acts of kindess all week.  We will wear shades of pink.

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Monday is Day 3 of our cycle.

2) Tuesday is Library.  Please return books on this day, as there is limited times we can go to the Library on other days.

3) Reading Logs for February can now be handed in.  Please try and read for 10min/day. :)

8) We are in desperate need for kleenex.  If you could spare a box, our noses would be greatful!  Thank you for those who have donated boxes already.  It is really appreciated!

9) Our March newsletter will go home later this week.

10) Report Cards have been distrubted electronically via your child's GAPPS account.

Our Week for February 20-23, 2024

 Hello Grade One Families:

We went home with our Poetry Folders.  Our worksheet is due back on Tuesday.  We had a busy week and had alot of fun learning.  We are 100 days smarter too!  We have our Winter Electives on Wednesday February 21.  Please see letter attached.  This letter also went home on Thursday.  

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Tuesday is Day 4 and it's Library too

2) Wednesday is Elective Day!  Please see letter attached as to what is needed and expected.  

3) There are no MWW words for the week, we have Family Day on Monday.

4) Please contine to Read and Log in their Februrary Reading log sheet.  We need to be reading aloud 10 min/day minimum.  

5) Our Assessment Folder will be coming home shortly.  Please refer to the Reading and Writing Goals for Term 2.

Primary Winter Electives are coming up!

When: Wednesday Feb 21, 2024

Bus Departure from school: 9:30 am sharp!

Bus Departure from ROC: 1:30 pm

(arriving back to Rick Hansen PS around 2pm)

What I need to bring to have fun!

• Dress appropriately for the weather ( winter jacket, snow pants, winter boots, hat, mitts/gloves)

• Backpack with Lunch inside (extra mitts)

• Boomerang Lunch/snacks/water bottle/juice box

• No food will be available for purchase

• All parent volunteers will need to have an Appendix 1B form filled out and brought with them to the ROC.  There is lots of parking on site.  Please bring your lunch too.  

We are looking forward to Tubing and Tobogganing and a day filled with fun memories. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.

Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate!  

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

We will be engaging in Lunar New Year activities throughout the week.

6) Term One Report Cards will be distruted electronically via your child's GAPPS account shortly.  Please refer to communication sent via the school.

7) All materials and lose parts are due to the school by Friday February 16 so we can start to build our playgrounds the week of February 20.  Any lose parts from home is appreciated so we can be Engineers!  Thank you for your contributions so far. 

8) Upcoming Event- Winter Electives at the ROC- Wednesday February 21.  A note will be coming home later this week.

 Hello Grade One Families:

Our February newsletter went home this week.  In it, is our learning targets for the month.  As well as a class list if you will be participating in Valentine's Day Exchange.  We have an exciting month ahead.  We have our 100th Day of school on February 13th too!  We are entering Term 2.  Our expectations for learning are changing and we will be learning to use checklists and keep track of our learning goals.  Next Assessment Folder in February you will receive a Mid Year Check in for Reading and Writing.  I am so proud of how far they have all come.  Thank you for being partners in your child's education.

Our week for January 29- February 1

Hello Grade One Families:

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Monday is Day 5 of our cycle

2) There will be no MWW words next week, it's a short week. :)

3) There is no school on Friday February 2.

4) Please go on a Material Hunt and save those recyclable materials and have your child bring them to school by Friday February 16.  We are going to be Engineers and build a playground structure out of recyclable materials!  Any loose parts will do!  Please think about fasteners too like (glue, tape, playdoh)

Our week for January 22-26, 2024

 Hello Grade One Families:

Tomorrow is a PA DAY.  School will resume on Monday January 22.  It will be a Day 5 of our cycle.

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Our Poetry Folders went home today.  We are to read with fluency and expression. The poem is called New Years Resolution.  We have a worksheet to complete too and bring back completed on Monday.

2) Our MWW words for Lesson # 45 are /sh/ blends and sight words

Our worksheet is given out on Monday and due back by Friday.  

3) Our Decodable Reader is called The Ship .  We read this together as a whole class on Monday.  We use our decoding strategies and we read for meaning.  We build our expression and fluency throughout the week. Please put the copy into their Blue Duotang at home.  Please have them read 3-4 times throughout the week and listen to their phrasing and expression improve!  Don't forget to read and log too.  

4) We are learning to make connections to the text as we read.

We will be working on this throughout Term 2 in our Reading Groups.

5) We are going on a Material Hunt.  More to follow next week with a Science letter coming home to help support us build our Playgrounds.  We are going to be Engineers!

6) Please dress appropriately to be outside for 2 recesses weather permitting.  Extra mitts/socks/clothes are appreciated.

7) We are growing!  Please ask us about our likes/dislikes for snacks and lunches.  Also, please ask us if our indoor shoes still fit. 

8) Please return/sign any Elective forms and send back promptly to school.  We are going to the ROC on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.  If you need more forms, please let me know.

Our week for January 15-18 2024

 Hello Grade One Families:

There will be no school on Friday, January 19, 2024.  It is a PA Day.  

We will resume our MWW words the week of January 22.

Here are some reminders for our upcoming week.

1) Monday is Day 1 of our cycle.

2) Library is Day 4 (Thursday)

3) Scholastic Book Order is due January 19.  Order is submitted online and orders are sent to the classroom

4) Please dress your child appropriately for the weather.  We are outside weather permitting for 2 recesses.  Please have extra mitts/socks/clothes at school for those occassional accidents or if we get wet playing in the snow. ❆

5) Thursday January 18 is MOVIE NIGHT.  🍿 This is organized by our Parent Council.  Information regarding this was sent home previously via the Family Weekly.  It begins at 6 pm.  

6) Winter Electives is on February 21 at The ROC.  Please fill out the package that was sent home this week.  Payment is on School Cash online.  

7) There is another sheet coming home next week. It is an Informed Consent Agreement.  This letter needs to be signed and returned promptly back to school.  This letter contains information about our day and expectations too.
